Google has announced a series of initiatives designed to support the democratic process and protect its platforms from misuse during the upcoming Indian General Elections. Recognizing its responsibility to connect voters with reliable information, the tech giant is taking proactive steps to combat misinformation, including content generated by artificial intelligence.
Google is committed to providing reliable voting information and countering misinformation during the Indian General Elections.
A key focus for Google is ensuring voters can easily access authoritative information from trusted sources. The company has partnered with the Election Commission of India to prominently display essential details, such as voter registration and voting procedures, in both English and Hindi on Google Search and YouTube.
YouTube's recommendation algorithms will prioritize credible content throughout the election period. Furthermore, the YouTube homepage will showcase trusted sources and an "Up Next" panel, making election-related information readily available to users. YouTube will also highlight content from verified sources during crucial moments through its Top News and Breaking News sections, in addition to a dedicated news watch page.
Google is also implementing information panels to identify the funding sources of publishers receiving public or government funds. These panels will also provide contextual information for topics susceptible to misinformation.
To safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, Google has reinforced its existing policies to protect its products and services from abuse, while simultaneously curbing the spread of misinformation. These policies apply universally to all users, irrespective of content type.
The company employs a combination of human reviewers and advanced artificial intelligence models to identify and remove content that violates its policies. Google's AI capabilities are enhancing its efforts to combat abuse, enabling quicker responses to emerging threats.
Google is committed to transparency in election advertising. Advertisers are required to undergo identity verification and provide necessary certifications from the Election Commission. Election ads must also include disclosures indicating the advertiser's identity and location. Google maintains a searchable hub for all election ads, offering insights into advertisers and their spending.
Google is taking steps to identify AI-generated content through new tools and policies. The company has introduced disclosure requirements for election ads containing synthetic content and will soon require creators on YouTube to label realistically altered or synthetic content. The new ad policies prohibit the use of manipulated media to mislead people, such as deepfakes or doctored content.
Google has also implemented restrictions on Gemini, limiting the types of election-related queries it will respond to and prioritizing the provision of high-quality information. Additional features, such as the "About this Image" tool in Search and digital watermarking for AI-generated images, aim to provide users with context and help them assess credibility.
Google has also joined the C2PA coalition, a cross-industry effort to promote transparency and context for AI-generated content. The company has confirmed the deployment of technology to counter harmful AI-generated content aimed at deceiving voters during the 2024 elections.
