Birmingham: From the moment he entered the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets, Jasprit Bumrah exuded focus. The signature shoulder click, the rhythmic walk – he was all business. After a brief warm-up, the measuring tape came out, marking his run-up for an intense 20-minute spell. With several key batsmen absent, Bumrah targeted Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair.
He challenged the batsmen with relentless accuracy and varied angles, exploiting the crease's width against right-handers and going around the wicket for left-handers. Beyond skill, his mental freshness was striking. The three-day break had clearly rejuvenated the 31-year-old, who bowled alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The trio, present in the Headingley Test, had a focused second day after skipping bowling during the first practice session in Birmingham. They each bowled for roughly thirty minutes before practicing their batting technique.
Siraj honed his defensive skills with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while Bumrah experimented with various bowling styles. He displayed intense focus, even engaging in shadow practice while awaiting his turn to bat, showing growing confidence throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja continued his batting practice, and Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep impressed. However, Kuldeep Yadav stood out, diligently working on both his batting and bowling.
The left-arm wrist-spinner sought constant feedback from the support staff and teammates. He fearlessly experimented with new angles and lengths. Given the dry Birmingham weather, the Indian team management might consider him for the second Test. His physical condition is excellent, and his bowling rhythm has been consistent since the pre-match sessions in Leeds. He engaged in a compelling duel with Gill before the first Test and continues to relish these battles in Birmingham.
Kuldeep's dedication extends to his batting. He has been diligently refining his technique under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak for the past 18 months, eager to make significant contributions with the bat.
After two days of intense practice, the team will take a break before regrouping on June 30. While the bowlers relax, bowling coach Morne Morkel can resume his playful wrestling with Arshdeep and Akash Deep. As for Bumrah, his participation remains a suspenseful question for at least the next 48 hours.
